I’m moving the final deadline for the first graded paper (on limits to flattening) back to next Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. I decided to do this because I want you to put appropriate effort into the second paper, which is still due this Friday.
Please write a three to five page essay, double-spaced with reasonable fonts on the following topic:
The dynamic growth of the U.S. economy over the last century has been described by Joseph Shumpeter as “creative destruction.” Twenty-first century globalization has been characterized as “creative destruction on steroids.” Do you agree with this characterization? Your response should address the following questions:
1. What did Shumpeter mean by “creative destruction”?
2. Do you agree that creative destruction is a good model of globalization?
3. The US economy, as a result of creative destruction, is generally thought to have been very successful during the last century, creating jobs and raising incomes dramatically. Do you feel that creative destruction in the context of globalization will be as successful for the US? Why or why not?
Please email me your essay as an attachment by Friday, November 21.
Write a brief summary of the economic impacts of globalization on the country you are studying. How has globalization affected imports, exports, GDP, employment, per capita incomes, income distribution, etc? Is that likely to change in the future, and if so how?
How important are international trade and financial flows to the economy of your country? What percentage of GDP is made up of imports/exports? How important are foreign-owned businesses to the nation’s economy? How many jobs do they provide? Has this changed over time? Do foreign-owned businesses pay higher or lower wages than other businesses in the economy? How many jobs do export producing businesses provide? Do export producing businesses pay higher or lower wages than the rest of the economy?
The summary should be no more than pages, double-spaced in length with 12 pt fonts. Please email your overview to me by Wednesday, November 12.

Published by September 26th, 2008 in Uncategorized. Enter your password to view commentsI have mentioned this assignment before and some of you have gotten a head start. That’s good. Here are the details. The assignment is in three parts:
1. Clarissa kindly posted our definition of globalization on her blog here. Find or create an image that illustrates this concept well to you.
2. Write a brief explanation of how your image fits the definition. Your explanation shouldn’t be more than a page in length. Bring both a link to your image and your explanation to class on Tuesday. You could put them on your blog if you like.
3. Create a VoiceThread of your explanation, and either email it to me or post it on your blog.
For your first assignment on the expert study, you selected a country to become an expert on. Now you need to do the second assignment:
Write a brief country overview summarizing the economic, political, and cultural environment there. The overview should be based on, but need not be limited to, the country’s entry in the CIA World Factbook. The overview should be one page, double-spaced in length with 12 pt fonts. Please email your overview to me by next Thursday, September 25.

(Alternatively, you can manually subscribe to any feed you wish by pasting it into your blog reader. I sent a zipped copy of the opml to your umw email account. Unzip the file and then import it into your blog reader.
