Environment Notes- November 14th, 2011
-Environment in the United States
-over the last 100 years? Worsened
-cause?
-development without enough regulation
-standard of living has raised dramatically, along with productivity
-this process associated with degradation of environment
-1970: Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act
-contamination was RIDICULOUS
-positive results, decrease of pollutants
-needed regulation at the federal level to be effective
-Environment and globalization
-why didn’t people consider effects of dumping, polluting?
-environment can withstand a certain amount of pollution
-as development has increased, more pollution and less places to dump
-concept of public property: “If I want to dump here, I can.”
-our environmental mistakes affecting other countries
-acid rain in Europe from US
-need for a bigger regulator?
-countries are accepting garbage for $$$
-aware of environmental consequences
-WHY?
-need the money more, environmental protection is a luxury
-how does globalization itself affect the environment?
-example of Beijing/the Olympics
-outsourcing to avoid domestic environmental regulations
-not globalization that caused the problem, but the companies/countries?
-globalization diminishes bio-variety
-contamination in food (peanut butter, spinach, etc.)
